What Is Citizen Science?

Citizen Science is about giving everyday people the tools and training to contribute to real-world scientific research. At ConnectOcean, we use this approach to regenerate marine ecosystems, monitor biodiversity, and build community-managed marine protected areas.

By involving local communities, students, tourists, and divers, we create hope spots that are driven by action, education, and regenerative tourism.

How It Works

Each Citizen Science dive includes:

Fish ID surveys

Identifying sharks, rays, and reefs
Logging vessel activity around the Catalinas Islands
Uploading data through our ArcGIS mobile platform

This valuable information supports local and international research institutions, helps guide conservation policies, and contributes to our goal of creating a multi-use regenerative community-managed marine area.

Step into the dynamic world of the intertidal zone with our Intertidal Explorer experience—an immersive, family-friendly adventure along the shores of Playa Danta and Playa Dantita. Guided by one of ConnectOcean’s expert Marine Life Specialists, you’ll explore tide pools and rocky reefs across five distinct tidal zones, cataloging marine species as part of our Citizen Science Project.

Perfect for budding biologists, curious families, or ocean lovers of all ages, this experience blends beach exploration, marine education, and hands-on conservation. Using species ID guides, magnifying glasses, and snorkeling gear, you’ll identify and document fascinating intertidal organisms, contributing your observations to our Citizen Science Database.

Discover Citizen Science Catamaran Expedition

Set sail on an unforgettable marine conservation journey aboard our 40ft luxury catamaran.

The Discover Citizen Science Catamaran Expedition invites you to explore some of the planet’s most biologically diverse coastal ecosystems—where tide pools, rocky reefs, and underwater nurseries come alive with sea life.

Guided by our Marine Life Specialists, you’ll snorkel pristine sites, observe rich intertidal zones, and learn about the essential role reefs play as nurseries and cleaning stations for countless marine species. As part of our Citizen Science initiative, you’ll also have the opportunity to participate in real conservation efforts, recording data and contributing to our research programs.
